Indian shares opened higher on Friday, led by information technology stocks after Tech Mahindra's quarterly revenue beat, while investors awaited earnings reports from several heavyweight companies after market hours.
The benchmark Nifty 50 (.NSEI) rose 0.38% to 24,166.50, while the BSE Sensex (.BSESN) added 0.47% to 77,543.1 by 9:16 a.m. IST.
Oil-to-telecom conglomerate Reliance Industries (RELI.NS) rose 1.1% ahead of its results after the market closes. Top private lenders HDFC Bank (HDBK.NS) and ICICI Bank (ICBK.NS) rose 0.7%, with their earnings due over the weekend.
Eight of the 16 major sectors logged gains. The broader small-caps (.NIFSMCP100) and mid-caps (.NIFMDCP100) lost 0.6% and 0.4%, respectively.
IT index (.NIFTYIT) rose 2%. Tech Mahindra (TEML.NS) gained 3% after it topped quarterly revenue expectations, helped by growth in its manufacturing segment and a weaker rupee.
Wipro (WIPR.NS), in contrast, fell 1.7% after it missed quarterly earnings estimates and signalled a weak recovery.
Brent crude rose 1% to $85 a barrel after the United States and Iran stepped up attacks across the Gulf.
